The summer solstice has just passed, and the warm season is upon us. And while credit card fraud and safety are always issues, they can become even more pronounced at this time of year. Not just because of the increased use of cards for purchases while traveling, but because of the physical custody, as it were, of the cards themselves.
In other words, it’s during summer that those critical pieces of plastic find themselves left more casually attended in beach bags, hotel cabanas, pockets and purses while roaming theme parks — and more.
Towards that end, AVP Solutions offers some tips on credit card protection. These are not only for your own use, but those of your customers as well. Inspired by a longer list at Scambusters.org, we offer a redaction for a busy summer glance (or perhaps your long lazy hours have started — our list stays short, so you can move on to that beach read):
*Keep an eye on your credit card every time you use it, and make sure you get it back as quickly as possible. Try not to let your credit card out of your sight whenever possible.
*Never leave your credit cards or receipts lying around.
*Shield your credit card number so that others around you can’t copy it or capture it on a cell phone or other camera.
*Only carry around credit cards that you absolutely need. Don’t carry around extra cards that you rarely use.
*Ideally, it’s a good idea to carry credit cards separately from your wallet — perhaps in a zippered compartment or a small pouch.
There are more suggestions at the website, but these are some of the critical ones to remember while on-the-move.
In addition to your own protection, consider offering a list of similar — and additional — protective suggestions to your customers; By posting on business-related websites they visit, or even printing up suggestions to include in any mailings (or emailings) you do already, you’re not only providing a valuable extra service, but reminding them that you’re “safe” to do business with.
